Kallie Artists have absolutely been coworking FOREVER. We just call them shared studios or artist collectives. There has always been a need and desire to collaborate, to be part of a larger creative community and to share resources, access to equipment. Building a creative community is the same as building a coworking community.
Every community is unique and yours might need specialized equipment. Just ask them. The shared equipment might be an old school printing press or a 3D printer - the idea is the same, you are just making it accessible to a larger group of people. Our services have always been geared towards artists and entrepreneurs, most people in our networks wear both of these hats. Our events art usually art based or business focused, however there are incredible collisions at networking events, receptions, and workshops because of the diversity of programming. I get asked all the time where I came up with the 'idea for Creative Blueprint' or the 'idea for coworking' or the 'idea for Foundery'. I always reply that I had nothing to do with 'inventing the concept of collaboration' I've just been running artist work, studio, exhibition and event spaces for over 10 years now. It's been an easy and natural evolution, we are simply responding to a need, solving the problems we get asked to solve every day by our creative community. They just want an inspiring and empowering community and an affordable and accessible place to do their work, whatever kind of work that might be. Don't we all? Check out our Network of Coworking & Artist Studios in Toronto. One of our spaces is completely raw, filled with a dynamic community of painters and sculptors. Many of the artists are self-employed or do freelance work. Another is a hybrid space where we are home to some freelance artists & designers, creative start-ups & entrepreneurs. You will find people working on a laptop and working on a easel. And another is a more traditional 'coworking space' where freelancers, entrepreneurs, start-ups, and community groups host meetings, attend workshops & events in addition to doing their day-to-day work.
