What news agency is this from?
I don't know what's your definition of standard of living, but you were ansering
to someone talking about wages. Let's focus on that. Can middle and lower
wages be raised by lowering profits, waste, and maybe higher wages? IMO,
it's obvious. If you don't think so, please explain. But I guess that your
argument relies on a change in trade patterns consequent to the
abandonment of imperialism in one country. Again, I don't know what you call
imperialism, but a country like Germany has no imperial ventures of its own
and a decent trade balance. Even if German capital abandonned all its claims
on foreign assets (or was forced to as a consequence of foreign
disagreement with its new regime), how would German wages not be able to
buy the same foreign products? But maybe you are thinking about a blockade
of some sort? I don't think this is likely to happen against any first world
country. Is that the cause of our disagreement and of your dogmatism?
In fact it looks like there's more chances that first world workers' buying power
would drop if there was a worldwide overthrow of capitalism. Not that I know for
sure, this is simply speculation.
That said, I am not against a voluntary drop in consumption (which is likely to
follow a hike in hourly wages as long as a part-time jobs are available). I am
not even against a forced drop in consumption because I think that the current
situation is desperate.
