The primary contradiction is between capital and the working class. But it
is important to fight imperialism. The three worlds theory was useful in
fighting the first world (the U.S.). It is an useful analisys in what is
going on today. We had a debate last year at the NLG convention on the
Eastern European crisis. I felt that the debate was silly as to who the bad
guys were. The U. S. very clearly encouraged right wing nationalist hate
groups during Tito's time. For the U. S. to try to stop a genocidal fight
that it helped create and fund is ludicrous. U.S. activists must keep the
government out of the political affairs of other people. The U. S.
government clearly means no good.
Another example is Indonesia. The relationship between the Indonesian
government and U. S. corporations is why Indonesian folks, esp. trade
unionists are oppressed. I heard a Indonesian woman trade unionist speak at
the AFL-CIO women's conference. The audience was in tears. She had been in
prison for some time but the women with her in prison were dead. A civil war
in Indonesia must be related to U. S. imperialism just as the "troubles" in
Northern Ireland are 100% related to British imperialism.
There was great debate on the left about the three worlds theory. Some
Marxists viewed it as putting other issues above the main contradiction
against capitalism. I read Deng's article on the three worlds theory with
other Marxists from many countries. My take was that Deng was never a
Marxist but a Neo Liberal. He should have remained in jail as the capitalist
roader that he was.
