I would tend to share Mark's pessimism. The chances are slim. But they
are not non-existent... well, they may be, but I don't have that particular
crystal ball, so I have to act as if they are not.
I'm working on a book now, which will be lambasted for "adventurism", which
not only will explain why the so-called left better put aside their
luxurious bipolar liberal sensitivities and begin preparing for armed
struggle, but will give some military theory, and practical advice on how
to do so. Flame away, folks.
When the situation devolves into fascism, just as is happening to Colombian
peasants right now (on behalf of Occideental Petroleum, by the way), the
masses who are being attacked will integrate into whatever organization
offers protection and hope. The AUC and the Colombian military have been
the best recruiters the FARC could have ever hoped for. And the truth is,
warts and all, the FARC is the only hope in Colombia.
The fascists are already preparing, and even though they are held in check
FOR NOW by officialdom, history has already shown us that capitalism under
duress will unleash fascism as a weapon to protect its interests. As for
capitalists seeing the error of their ways when the situation gets bad
enough... Hah! They'll be led in that miraculaous conversion by the Easter
Bunny with Santa Claus on rear security. Capitalist is not a moral defect
in an individual, it's a job description in a system. And as we've amply
shown here, neither we nor the earth can afford them any longer.
Feliz Navidad to all.
