Well, actually, he is here!  ;>

Someone has a good memory!  You even spelled my name right!!!  Yes, just
push a little bend into them, just a little.  It doesn't take much.  My
Si's hatch struts have worked well enough that way for, I believe, the
nearly four years I've had her.  The perfect approach, granted, would be
to take off the plastic pieces required to allow full strut mount access
to replace them with new ones, but I have no complaint with the
"friction lock" approach and I use that hatch a few times a week
typically.

which recently held 4 new 185/60R14 AVS-i's + a 27" road bike with lots
of room to spare, should be able to fit 2 bikes in there w/o having the
passenger seat folded forward nor the hatch unlatched.
