I've got a cheaper easier solution...  Everybody's got that ultra-cheap,
crap tool store near them.  Stop in and grab a cheap set of little
vise-grips.  Just clamp the Vise-grips on the internal rod of the strut on 1
side and if you've got it tight enough it'll hold far more than the weight
of the deck lid.
