on a related subject, now that I have a 91 I want to convert the seatbelt
lights to map lights. Is there a writeup of the procedure anywhere out
there?
(* snip *)
It will likely require the following:
(1) Take an exsisting light assembly from some other car or truck and graft it in.
(2) Visit a shoppe that sells RV accessories and look for something that fits and then graft it in.
There are power wires that are there already. You'll have to trace them back or replace the wires (which is what I would do personally and go with a larger gauge wire...).
As far as grafting it in, I would fiberglass it. But that's because I have a pretty good comfort level working with fiberglass. If your skills with fiberglass is not good (and it takes lots of practice...) you can look for a car audio shoppe that does custom work. It shouldn't be all that hard for them to fabricate you something.
To get an idea of what I am trying to describe, visit my friend's web site:

And look at how he grafted his radar detector in the area in question.
Then you could follow it up with the map lights in the door handles like on the Del Sol's. That would be a sweet addition and would compliment the overhead light.
