By "a lot slower", we mean several order of magnitude slower. In my own tests, I found that a commit operation which took under a minute with CVS took perhaps 40 minutes with SVN. Marten also conducted tests and reported that he finally aborted an SVN commit after it hit the 1 hour mark.
