I'm fairly sure Gungame was the most popular mod through the history of CS,
going back to when I used to play the original for years. And then Zombie
Mod became popular in 1.6 or CS:S, cannot remember which.

Is the number of people who play Deathmatch close to the amount of people
who play standard CS and DE maps?

Also, CS:GO players do not have the same appetite for custom maps as
players did in 1.0 - 1.6. There were no sanctioned maps besides the ones
that came with the install, and that number was up to 26 maps I believe as
of 1.6. Now with MM, many players are comfortable with those maps, and are
reluctant to try anything else. There are some fantastic custom maps out
there, and yet people always vote dust2, nuke, inferno, or train when the
mapchooser.smx vote comes up. Our server usually runs those 4 maps and
mirage / mill nightly, even though we have almost 20 maps in the rotation /
RTV / mapchooser plugin. If we can't get players to fall in love with
custom maps like 1.6, I'd at least to like have a larger selection of Valve
sanctioned maps.
