Yup, search the mailing list archive. This issue has been posted over and over again. The amount it consumes depends on the system and servers being ran. We have single server instances eating up 3 or 4 GB of RAM in just 8 hours. (no, it's not a SM memory leak. Piss off.)

It's not limited to Windows. It's not limited to Linux. The cron solution is cute. If you have servers that are populated 24/7, restarting isn't a fix and obnoxious.
