Grids give your site a visual consistency, which in my book is a good thing.
Absolutely.
12-column grids are handy if you don't know the final design - they're very
flexible in that
you can use as a base for 2-, 3-, 4-, or 6- column pages. Usually they're used
for templates
where the creator of the grid cannot know the final layout use.
I feel a WordPress theme here ?
But if you do know the page layout then it doesn't seem worth the complication
of basing it
on a 12-column grid - you can simply, as you say, create the grid you need
directly.
I think that sums up my point all along.
I set out to 'learn about grids' because I've ignored them up to now. Only to discover I've been
using them for years but thought of them as columns. I shall continue to use columns, but tell
everyone they're grids, and thus increase my kudos immeasurably.
Thanks to those who've joined in the discussion.
