Heh! Interestingly, I never bought books from Kalahari.net when I lived in SA (they were quite small then). But I've bought from them since living in Ireland - mostly to get my fix of Zapiro comics ;) I've never bought any technical books from them. I would certainly consider them first if I was in SA, though I doubt you will get the same discounts you often get on Amazon.

Any ideas why Amazon doesn't have a South African operation? They do have a software development office in Cape Town now - seems like they are keen to exploit^H^H^H^H^H^H^Hemploy South African programmers but not serve them directly as customers...

I am *very* happy with service I have received from Amazon in the past. When the SA post office delayed the delivery of a parcel for more than a month for no apparent reason, I thought it had gone missing and Amazon resent the entire order without asking any questions. The replacement order arrived promptly, followed by the "missing" parcel weeks later. On another occasion they sent me an O'Reilly pocket guide with pages missing (not their fault), and they promptly replaced it at no cost without requiring that I return the original copy or sending any form of proof. For those reasons alone I will remain an Amazon customer - still, it's a pity that South Africans get such erraticaly poor service from the Post Office and SARS (who I think *should* read this email thread)
