The power to defeat any enemy of God and Israel.
First of all, it would be helpful that you look all of this up for
yourself, preferably in the KJV, but please choose your own version. I
would highly recommend a Strong's Concordance to aid the KJV in
understanding the deeper meanings in Hebrew, Chaldeean and Aramaic writings.
But there are others out there that are just as good, such as the Green's
Interlinear, for example, that you can look through at your local library
if you do not have access to one immediately. It is your own understanding
and not my opinion that is paramount to your study of this information.
For a basic understanding of how the ark of the covenant comes into the
history of the Hebrews (notice I did not exclude the Jews i.e. 'Judah' as
the only chosen tribe, but include all Hebrews, of all tribes, as the
whole of Israel, as it is to this day) as is well explained in Exodus,
where you will find the representations there are basically the building of
the article, and what it represents, such as Ex. 25:10-40, 26:33-34, 30:6.
By now, by reading these and the chapters subsequent to these, you should
have a good understanding that this is the place that God met with His
people in the tabernacle of the wilderness, (see Numbers 7:89 for example)
and the ark of the covenant is actually a small replica or representation of
His throne placed amidst the people, where the priests of the congregations
were allowed to speak with God, at the mercy seat, under certain
pre-existing conditions.
See also Leviticus 16:1-2 which reveals that the sons of Aaron were killed
for approaching the ark in an unholy manner, i.e. they brought in 'strange
fire' which was against the duties of the priesthood, see Leviticus.
10:1-2 for starters. Your Bible should reference the rest of this part.
There was a discipline and order that provided for anyone approaching the
ark, i.e. certain clothing was to be worn after being washed a certain way,
the skin was to be prepared a certain way, i.e. hygiene was very important;
no shoes, and the articles of the tabernacle were to be handled in a certain
manner, as ordered by God, and much more. A personal and deeper study of
this subject for your own understanding is recommended.
The powers of God are awesome! The ark was indeed the throne of God among
the people. It could not be defeated, and only certain people were allowed
to even handle it. The Hebrews who possessed the ark, as long as they
obeyed the rules of the Levitical priesthood duties, were invincible
against any enemy of Israel. For example, read Joshua chapters 3, 4, 6,
and 8 which deal with defeating specific armies who came against Israel,
and of the bringing down the walls of Jericho; defeating it wholly and
completely with merely the presence of the ark, and by the instructions of
God to blow the ram's horns and the shouting of the people at a certain
time. It shows regiment and discipline, are important when dealing with
God. He asks that things be done in an orderly fashion, as He instructs.
Nothing more, nothing less, and His power is with those who choose to obey
Him. Nothing has changed, except that we do not have, nor do we need the
ark of the testimony, i.e. the artifact itself, nor do we need 'material
objects' to aid our beliefs; as that was for a specific time, and for a
specific reason... He then gave us His only begotten Son, so that all who
believed upon Him could have eternal life... (John 3:15-17) and the
rest is His story...
However, Paul does remind us that the reason that we had material, and
physical objects in the tabernacle, and things were done a certain way,
and regimented to a certain discipline is explained, in Colossians 2:13-18
as an example, or 'shadow' of things to come, namely Christ.
For more about the ark of the covenant / testimony,
see Judges 20, 1-Samuel 3, 2-Samuel 6, 1-Kings 2, 1-Chronicles 6,
2-Chronicles 1, Jeremiah 3, Hebrews 9, Revelation 11.
For a reference,
the ark of the covenant is also known as:
the ark of the testimony,
the ark of Adonai Jehovah
the ark of Jehovah
the ark of Elohim
the Holy ark
the ark of Thy strength
These all provide for excellent study references for the ark of the
covenant.
Rather than going into any detail here that may include my opinion, it is
recommended that you study this article, as well as all the articles of
the Temple of God, for yourself, so that you can make your own
decisions, and beliefs of understanding your own way, as my opinion,
or my belief is not relevant, but rather I would that the Bible, God's
Word,
speak for itself to you on this matter.
