HateWatch News for September 20, 1999
**Suspect allegedly sent letters to hate groups**
One of two brothers charged with murdering a gay couple in Happy Valley
apparently tried to mail letters to white supremacists from a jail only
days after his arrest. Search warrant documents unsealed Friday allege
that Benjamin Matthew Williams, 31, sent letters apparently addressed to a
Fallbrook man who sheriff's deputies called ``a purveyor of white pride
literature'' and to a pastor in America's Promise.

**Rightist Party Gains in Austria Vote**
A rightist party led by a man notorious for past praise of the Hitler
regime registered big gains in Sunday's regional voting -- a closely
watched ballot because it fell just two weeks before Austria's
national elections. Joerg Haider's Freedom Party increased its popularity
by more than a third in voting for parliament in Vorarlberg, Austria's
westernmost province, according to preliminary results after polls closed.
It shot up to more than 27 percent, from 18 percent in the last Vorarlberg
vote five years ago, the results showed.

**Texas Gunman Tied to Hate Groups**
The vague profile of Larry Gene Ashbrook, who authorities say killed seven
churchgoers, wounded seven more, then killed himself, developed more
dimensions Friday, even as this city fought for perspective on the havoc
Ashbrook wrought. The man most people first learned of after his Wednesday
rampage at Wedgwood Baptist Church called and wrote to newspapers, feared
imagined persecutors--and may have mingled with Texas hate groups, people
who had met him said.

**Evangelicals Say Shootings Are Hate Crime**
The murderous rampage this week at a Texas Baptist church exemplified
rising hostility toward Christians in America and abroad--and an
inexplicable reluctance to recognize the shooting as a religious hate
crime, national evangelical leaders said Friday. From Jerry Falwell to Pat
Robertson, James Dobson and D. James Kennedy, conservative Christian
leaders uniformly decried what they called a double standard in treating
Christian victims of violence.

**Man charged with hate crime in Michigan case**

charged Friday with a hate crime for allegedly beating a black man, running
him over with his car and dragging him 50 feet.Prosecutors charged Charles
Raab, 30, with felony assault with intent to commit murder and felonious
ethnic intimidation, among other charges. He was jailed without bond.
Willie Jarrett, 35, was hospitalized Friday night in fair condition.

**Klansman convicted of trying to kill lawmen**
A North Carolina Ku Klux Klansman was sentenced Friday to 99 years in
prison for trying to kill a pair of Texas lawmen during a car chase and
gun battle. Jimmy Ray Shelton, 40, who was convicted Thursday of two
counts of attempted capital murder, received the maximum allowed
sentence.
