I was in the military in the late 60's and we did not have these problems
either. We had different problems.

Depends on how you define "Problem".

I spent from 1980 to 1996 pretty directly involved with the U.S.A.F. Do
you remember QP4? Or any of the other "Zero Defects" programs that seemed
to come yearly? How about the FMS (Foreign Military Sales) debacles?
Catch 22 has nothing on the military of today. I remember a briefing by
an ESC (Electronic Security Command) Captain where he was proudly
unveiling a new superduper Fax/Copy machine that the USAF had just
purchased for $550,000 each. We were told that, among other things, it
could withstand EMP (the electromagnetic pulse of a nuclear blast). He
was befuddled when asked who would be around to run it after such a
blast.
I am definately in the camp that says we do not need the military we
have. There are no threats to U.S. soil in the world. The threats are
to U.S. corporate interests. No one can invade the U.S., unless the
liberals have their way and we are all disarmed. Stand down the army,
keep half the marines, a small air force, and half the navy. The rest
can be scraped. The only excursions outside the U.S. should be under
U.N. auspices, and as part of combined forces directly led by the U.N.
That would keep the peace better than Big Brother does now. The
'boogyman' is held up to bolster the idea that we need to spend vast
amounts of money on 'systems'. BS! That is only true if we want to
dominate the world. That is the stance of an agressor nation. Our
incursions into the world are the reason we are hated, and the reason we
face foreign terrorism on our soil. Currently, our military is poorly
paid, while the contractors are getting fat. Often today, an E6 will be
sitting next to a contractor who is making 2 - 3 times what the military
man is making, and is not subject to getting sent of to foreign places.
Now why should that E6 stay in the military?
