I agree with this. One of the more interesting tidbits from the Fall of
the Wall was best expresses by one of the KGB generals when asked about
any plans to invade the U.S.
"There could be no invasion of America; everyone is armed. An invader
would face 20 million armed terrorists." I like the Swiss concept of
national defense: an armed and trained citizenry, a low profile
government, and freindly relationships with neighbors.

I agree with this also. The military has become a projection of power,
rather than a defence force. That projection has been used (since WWII)
more for the protection of corporate interests (mostly big oil) than any
other reason. The military has become the 'big stick' of corporate
America. The use of the military for corporate purposes is the main
reason we face so much hostility around the world, and the reason that
terrorism is so feared here. There is no effective defense against
terrorism other than a tightly controlled police state, and even then
there will be terrorist strikes. I believe that Machaevelli said; There
are only two ways to rule. One is to have all the peeople love you, and
the other is to have all the people fear you. It is by far easier to
have all the people fear you.

Well, actually, with capitalistic economics working the way they are,
using Brazil's experiment with growing their own fuel isn't such a good
idea. The economocs of growing sugar cane and refining it to useable
fuel is not competitive with gasoline. Sustainability is not cheap in
vampire capitalism. It requires people to look ahead farther than their
next bottom line report. If we started today, we could be self reliant
in about 20 years. But that would take a commitment in both money and in
rearranging priorities. The transition would be difficult. Finland is
starting on small scale self sufficiency programs, as are other
countries. Small scale community based systems are available, but
fighting the government to get them going is a problem. Big business
controls big government, and big business does not want us to be self
sufficient. As always, no change will happen when most people are fat,
dumb and happy. There are self sufficient groups in America, but they
are hard to find and constantly under attack by governmental regulatory
agencies. From county land use laws, building codes and other regulatory
agencies up to the E.P.A., the array of forces opposed to small scale
self sufficiency are very hard to fight.
