-Caveat Lector-

All of this ignores the many non-European Jews who make up a sizeable
portion of the Israeli demographic. This includes Jews from Syria, Iraq,
Iran, Yemen, and of course Palestine - all of which had good sized Jewish
populations before the founding of Israel.

Again - Non-Jews are allowed citizenship in Israel. It is not guaranteed for
non-Jews (just as citizenship must be applied for and accepted in the US and
pretty much every other country) while it is for Jews, and thus
conversations about who is Jewish or not do affect citizenship, but no one
is DENIED citizenship simply because they are not Jewish.

Guaranteeing citizenship for Jews is NOT the same as denying citizenship for
others. This seems to be your confusion.

As to the religious aspects of these conversations, I think the inordinate
amount of control the religious minority holds over the secular majority is
criminal, unfortunate, and evil. Much like I feel about the religious right
in America. The advantage is that we don't have the sort of Govt. that
requires coalitions, so the religious right here has to integrate into the
majority parties, and thus theoretically have to tone down their message, as
opposed to in Israel (or any of the parliamentary democracies) where they
can keep their (evil) message pure, and wield power through a small number
of critical seats. The disadvantage to our system of course is that in
reality, once the religious right has integrated itself into a party ( the
GOP as it were) It is very hard to weed it out, and it shapes the entire
political spectrum.

Those religious assholes tried to define me and my family (and most
Israelis) as not Jews because we were not orthodox enough. This was as much
about internal political control, as immigration policy. For the most part,
they lost that battle in Israel - Most felt "Jewish enough for Hitler -
Jewish enough for Israel" was a saner policy.

Again - I do not defend a lot of what Israel has done. I do think it has a
right to exist. Personally I think the Palestinian hardliners made a big
mistake with this last intafada. They quite possibly would have a state
right now, with a more liberal Israel as a neighbor, if they had not started
blowing up schools discos pizzerias etc, again.

Finally as to your last paragraph, I would find it more believable if posted
about any of the myriad other places the US supports, that support
dictatorial, racist, and otherwise unsavory regimes with even half the
frequency, vehemence and vitriol you express about our support of Israel.

For example Kuwait - a place where there is still slavery.
Saudi Arabia - talk about restrictive racist immigration policy - you cannot
even VISIT Saudi Arabia of you are not a Muslim.

I could list all the South American And European dictators we supported,
just because they didn't like communists, but who has the time.. And you
know this anyway.
