It's not particularly helpful, but I've noticed something new that may or
may not be connected, though it manifests itself only in Opera, not
Firefox.

In both browsers I have set CTRL-R to "Refresh". which I use a lot when editing
web pages (using raw html in a prgrammable editor): write file then refresh
browser to check the edit.

It always works as expected in Firefox, but in Opera I had recently (can't
say for how long) found that if I returned to the browser after doing some
editing and saving, CTRL-R would not work and I had to use the mouse and click
on the Refresh button.

But yesterday something (I can't recall what) led me to try just clicking
in the Opera window, followed by typing CTRL-R. That produced a refresh.

It turns out to be very reliable. So when I switch from editor window to
Opera window, instead of having to move mouse cursor onto refresh button
and click, I just click and type CTRL-R, which typically takes much less time.

(I use control+Right to switch from a workspace with editor to a workspace
with browser in roughly the same location, so the mouse cursor is
always already in the opera window.)

I then tested with CTRL-F, which invokes the search window and had the same
result. If I don't first click, CTRL-F does nothing though clicking
    Edit --> Find
works.

However if I just click anywhere in opera, then CTRL-F works.
The new discovery reduces the annoyance of the problem getting keyboard
focus.

Again this is a problem only in Opera not Firefox,

[Firefox is the browser I use most of the time, but I like to keep it
running for weeks as an extension to my working memory, with various
windows and tabs open across hibernate-resume sessions. However it tends to
suffer from bloat and eventually has to be killed and restarted. Using
opera for short quick lookups, news items, etc. allows FF to run for longer
before it has to be restarted. They must have a very poor garbage
collector, since I can restart FF with all the windows that were previously
open and have a much smaller process size.

I use Fedora 22 + XFCE on my home desktop and laptop.]

I think these focus problems have emerged only in the last year,
though I don't remember when they started.

Clearly the problems are not caused by ctwm though I don't know whether
it has the power to be changed to defeat them.

    SimulateMouseClickOnEntry ????
