No, it doesn't HAVE to be static, I guess.

It's just nicer.

Robert, as you know, I have the Linksys router. That'll work fine & dandy with ddclient, right?

Depends. From what I've seen, the ddclient software in firmware is pretty limited. If your needs are limited, then it should be fine. But if you want to use a dynamic DNS service other than what's already programmed in or if you have more than one domain name or you want to do something a little bit different, then you are out of luck.

And how do you like cable modem access?

So far, it has worked great. My major headaches were not with the cablemodem but rather with the DI-415 wireless router. But I solved those issues:

 1) moved all services off the router (DHCP, DNS, ddclient, etc.)
 2) created a script to reboot the router every morning.

With the ddclient setup, I'm able to run a webserver, an ssh service, bittorrent, and anything else, if I set it up.

Last night I checked my cable speed via CNET's speed tester, which came in at about 2200 kbps. As far as I can tell it's also been up 24x7, but there may be times it has gone down and I haven't noticed.

- Robert
