Anyone here more familiar with Bioconductor? I'm most keen on knowing how it can connect to large datasets stored in databases, e.g. MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, etc.
Yes, the bioconductor package relies on R being installed on the machine (http://cran.r-project.org/doc/FAQ/R-FAQ.html#How-can-R-be-obtained_003f). I have installed it on XP and I think it is in Fink for OS X. There was an installer for XP and there may be one also for OS X.
Bioconductor is used heavily in microarray experiments to identify associations and expression levels.
R is open source (http://www.r-project.org/) and has a repository like CPAN (http://cran.r-project.org/mirrors.html) called CRAN.
Bioconductor is also open source (http://www.bioconductor.org).
As far as connection to databases is concerned, I don't think it (bioconductor) was designed to integrate with a RDMS but uses the flat files put out by the various microarray scanning machines.
