Please do tell. What are you doing with Gimp? Care to share your adventures? > Some questions: > > - in your opinion, does GIMP have all the functionality of > Photoshop? I don't have Photoshop although I've been reading about it, so I can't really compare. Given that, Gimp/Gimpshop has allowed me to do everything that I've wanted to do with image manipulation, at least so far. > - how do you feel it compares to Photoshop ease of use? I don't know either very well, but I have played with both Gimp and Gimpshop (gimp with Photoshop-like menus and shortcuts). Some things about Gimp that irk me: - selecting. You've got one shot. You cannot select and then adjust. That option exists in the crop tool but not in the selection tool. - vector graphics. It's there, sort of, but not in any usable way. At least not in the same way Photoshop has, from what I've been reading. - the Gimp community, specifically the gimp-users list. They don't take criticism well. It's their way or the highway. They do not like the comparison/contrast to Photoshop. And whatever you do, do not mention Gimpshop. I'm currently examining other Gimp forums, including the gimp-win list and the Gimp Users Group (GUG). > - is GIMP up to snuff for print graphics? That depends. For the average home user, most likely, Gimp will cover all their bases. On the other hand for the professional print person, the answer is most likely no, at least from what I've read on the the Gimp mailing lists. > - in your opiunion, does GIMP have the vector graphics > funcionality of Illustrator? No. Try Inkscape for vector graphics. OpenOffice.org Draw is also a vector graphics program. > - and how does it compare to Illustrator's usability? Gimp doesn't. I've heard very good things about Inkscape. > sorry if this has been covered before, would love to hear about > GIMP or other OSS graphics tools. TuxPaint (great for the kids), F-stop (simple photo touchups), xfig (old and crude, but works), ImageMagic for command-line manipulation. Currently, I'm taking a beginning class on Photoshop. But since I don't have Photoshop, I'm using Gimpshop. So far, I've been able to do almost everything with just a few changes to the instructions.
