Yes, add/substract is nice, especially if you want to select more complex regions. But for simple adjustments, like moving the right edge of the selection area in by a few pixels, add/subtract is a bit cumbersome. >> - the Gimp community, specifically the gimp-users list. Just because they may not be trying to compete with Photoshop, doesn't mean they are not. Both PS and Gimp do image manipulation. They have several of the same features/tools/properties to manipulate those images. Apparently, Gimp can even save/open Photoshop .psd files. It seems obvious to compare them. So, yes, users are making the comparison. But why should that be such a surprise? Gimp was born out of the comparison to Photoshop. In one of his first posts[1], Peter Mattis, one of the Gimp's originating authors, said this: "Suppose someone decided to write a graphical image manipulation program (akin to photoshop)." Later, when gimp 0.54 was released, Peter had this to say: "During Christmas break we encountered Photoshop 3.0 and discovered the 'joy of layers'. This functionality was deemed absolutely necessary and will part of the next release of the GIMP." Why the current gimp-users members are so hostile to Photoshop and Gimpshop users is beyond me. That's not exactly a way to win support for your Open Source project. > do you think so based on what you have seen? Yes. Or more accurately, I think so based on my experiences participating on the gimp-users lists.
