1) Make a selection normally. 2) Now Hold Shift and start another selection. 3) Be sure to let go of shift immediately after clicking and dragging to start the next selection. 4) The new selection will be added to the current selection 5) Use Ctrtl instead of shift to subtract from the current selection If you continue holding shift and ctrl it does other things so make sure you let go of them before making selections (unless you understand and want that behavior > - the Gimp community, specifically the gimp-users list.
