You can adjust selections by using Shift and Ctrl.

1) Make a selection normally.
2) Now Hold Shift and start another selection.
3) Be sure to let go of shift immediately after clicking and dragging to
start the next selection.
4) The new selection will be added to the current selection

5) Use Ctrtl instead of shift to subtract from the current selection

If you continue holding shift and ctrl it does other things so make sure
you let go of them before making selections (unless you understand and
want that behavior

I'd guess that's because they are not trying to compete with photoshop
and it's the users who make the comparison? do you think so based on
what you have seen?
