Has anyone here successfully connected to the internet via a modem
and using PPP? If so, would you mind if I pick your brain?

At ByteWorks[1] we've been fairly successful transitioning from MS
Windows 98 to Debian/Sarge. KDE, OpenOffice.org, and Firefox work
quite well on the older machines that have been refurbished.
Currently, these machines run in the shop with all network traffic
going over ethernet.

However, when these machines leave the shop, they will be in the
students home connecting to the 'net via modem, which is presenting
some issues. In particular, connecting via PPP to the city's modem
bank. Under Windows 98 we click through the Dial-up Network wizard
and it connects just fine. Unfortunately, under Debian we have not
been able to get KPPP to work right. In fact KPPP doesn't even
display, but that's an issue we'll resolve later. For now our
strategy is to to get the following pieces to work:

- driver (works)
- dial out (works)
- connect to city's modem bank (works)
- establish PPP (does not work)

We just want to establish a PPP connection and have been trying with
wvdial. wvdial dials and connects, but instead of starting a PPP
connection, a terminal session is started. Does anyone know if some
kind of special sequence needs to be sent in order to make the
connection?

I've been reading up about modems and ppp, although each site seams
to differ from the next in its explanation. Just thought I'd ask
here to see if anyone has been successful and what they did.
