The problem we've been having with KPPP is right at step one: 1) Launch kppp We can't. When we click on it from the KDE menu, KPPP never opens (Is there a log file which records such errors?). When we try kppp from the command line, we get some error message saying that it cannot start (don't recall what it is.) An 'apt-get remove' followed by an 'apt-get install' for kppp didn't resolve the problem. At the time we were just starting with playing with the modem, so we decided to put KPPP on the shelf and work with wvdial to get dialing out working. Now that dialing out works, we're focusing on ppp. So, any thoughts on why KPPP won't launch? I'm suspecting it's a permissions problem, but that's just a guess.
