https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats In particular, I went to the "Quick Installation" section, did an apt-get for the codecs and dvd playing, and ran the install-css.sh script. I did all this while the DVD was in the drive. However, Totem wouldn't play the DVD until I ejected and re-inserted the DVD. Then all worked fine.
