Installed VLC (will try mplayer later). Regardless of whether I use vlc or totem, I've only been able to play one out of two of the DVDs that a friend of mine has. Interestingly enough, he can play both with vlc under Windows.
With the DVD that can't play, nothing shows in /var/log/messages and vlc just doesn't play: no error message, nothing. Totem complains about not having the appropriate plug-in, yet provides no clue as to what the appropriate plug-in might be.
