Yes, networking works and elinks is able to display google.com and other sites just fine. I haven't tried Konqueror, yet, as I do not have it installed, but will shortly. I was trying Nautilus, but I guess it cannot be used as a web browser.
As for Firefox, I create a new profile which exhibits the same problem I also tried uninstalling and then re-installing Firefox. Same problem. I started Firefox from the command line, capturing output, but nothing is logged. If it weren't for the JavaScript issue, I would say it's a problem with name resolution. But since even the javascript pseudo-protocol doesn't work, I'm puzzled. And it's only this one installation in a VM. All my other Ubuntu installs have Firefox working just fine.
