I have been having a similar problem (unresponsive FF 3.5.3 PPC).  I 
did try the "throw out the app" and re-install maneuver, but it did 
not help.  Googling seems to find a few (mostly old reports of this). 
One suggestion was to find the FF profile folder and re-name your 
profile folder (don't delete it in case you need to put it back) and 
make FF regenerate it.  I have re-named mine.  So far FF has not 
locked up, but I just did it.  YMMV.
