If he were to then move so that I could only play him online, > what would've changed? > That would work if your brother has perfectly memorized all of the rules, the combat results table, terrain effects chart, reinforcement schedules, etc. It could also work if you were using a pbem program that allows "live" on-line play, such as Vassal, and you could still guide him through it as he makes his moves.
I'm not saying that each player must have his own physical copy of a game to be "legal", but when I play via CyberBoard, I really have to have the "real" game with me so I can look things up.
