Audie Murphy was, in fact, America's most decorated soldier in WWII and
played himself in the movie 'To Hell and Back. He received a battlefield
commission and is credited with one of the best lines ever spoken in combat
(if it is true). Surrounded by the enemy and stranded on top of a burning
tank destoyer, he was calling down artillery fire closer and closer to his
own position until at last the battery commander at the other end of the
walkie-talkie link asked, 'Just how close are the Germans to where you are?'
Murphy allegedly replied
'Hold the phone and I'll let you talk to them!'
