The reality of the Tories, as Steve says, is also this...the Home Affairs
Select Committee, before Lord Cullen had even sat, rejected a handgun ban.
It even rejected "central storage" and advised that little should be changed
as a result of Dunblane. The Tories could easily have said that in that case
they were going to accept that Report and not ban handguns, impose storage
or etc. They didn't. Whatever else Blair may have said it was Major who was
Prime Minister ands Major who not only had a majority in Parliament.

Cullen also rejected a handgun ban, in fact he went to pains to
say that even if one were imposed despite his objections then the
use and possession of handguns by clubs should continue as there
was no threat from guns possessed by a club, only privately. The
Home Office told me they felt that was "unworkable", yet they felt
it was workable to lock up everyone's .22s at clubs!
The tories shafted us. Worse perhaps than they would have done if
Labour hadn't made an issue out of it, but at a bare minimum they
would have required all handguns to be locked up at clubs. No-one
forced them to ban SLRs either.
Okay, fair enough, one third of them defied the whip and voted against
the Bill, but two-thirds of them didn't. Until someone sits down
with William Hague and impresses upon him that he isn't going to get
our votes without a U-turn, and he agrees, I say stuff them. If
your local MP is pro-shooting, then vote for them. If there is
a candidate who is pro-shooting, vote for them. Also make them
aware of what issue you are basing your vote on.
Steve.
