The Conservatives were in power during the Dunblane
Massacre and the Cullen Inquiry and if there was any
coverup at all it was because they ordered it done to
protect and suit themselves.
I think William Hague knows that the "country" and
shooting lobbies are numerically and hence electorally
insignificant. Also with a little Labour stirring-up
against them, the Tories promising to restore
fox-hunting and pistol-possession could lose him
votes.
An additional problem would be that if you succeeded
and DID get handguns for sport shooting back (aka
Serfs' Privileges Restored) you'd be putting back into
power the sack of rats who'd betrayed you in the first
place. No doubt they'd just do it again when it suited
them. People with only one principle (get into power
and stay there) change leaders like they change their
socks and for the same reason, but they don't change
their stripes.

On the first point I don't think so, Mr Hague has been
wooing the hunters, however, more importantly there are
enough shooters in areas to swing elections for MPs. Many
of the Midland constituencies are marginal, and in Shropshire
and Staffordshire there are enough shooters to swing an election
and they do know that. William Hague knows better than anyone
else, because he nearly didn't become an MP because of opposition
from shooters in 1988 (he was elected in a by-election).
I have to say a partly agree on the second point, but as I have
been saying for umpteen years now and I am echoed by John Swift
in the latest BASC magazine, don't vote by _party_, vote by
_candidate_. And don't sit there hoping that one of them will
be okay, figure out who the most likely person to win is and
talk them around.
Steve.
