Come on, Steve, get off the fence! In your opinion is John
Swift an effective leader for the BASC or part of the problem
and would a threat to his leadership promote progress?
My personal opinion is that:
Firstly, the BASC should have been making more of an effort to
unite shooters within one organisation by undermining the other
organisations and offering the same organisational facilities
in deliberately set up "branches" for target rifle shooters,
black powder shooters etc within the BASC.
Secondly, I think the BASC should have been making more of an
effort to restate and research the whole of the "hidden agenda"
and the individual outrages which have been used to ratchet it
forward.
Thirdly, I think that the BASC should be promoting shooting as
a sport in schools for both boys and girls, not in general terms
"if asked about it", but pro-actively as in "we went out and set
up X hundred school shooting clubs this year".
Fourthly, I think that the BASC should be undertaking a limited
number of legal initiatives - asking for judicial reviews on
certain issues, setting up test cases - to establish precedents,
embarrass the government and clarify the situation.
Obviously the BASC hasn't been doing the above and therefore
hasn't been pleasing me, so in my opinion a bit of a prod would
probably be a good thing to spur on John Swift to greater efforts.
Regards
Norman Bassett

BASC is mainly a field sports organisation, something I am not
an expert on so I have no opinion. This is why we have a field
sports editor! Perhaps Peter can render a view.
I do think there is much to commend the idea of BASC taking
on other aspects of shooting so we could have a single
national organisation, but the question is whether a
replacement for Mr Swift would agree.
Certainly I was unhappy about what happened in 1989, that
was stupid, the 1988 Act did more harm to shotgun users
than anyone else except the relatively small number of
people whose guns were prohibited.
Steve.
