I witnessed and accident on the Gallery at Bisley in the early 70s when
on the firing point next to mine a new shooter undergoing instruction
shoot the instructor with a 9mm Luger through the palm of his hand.

The instructor carelessly held his hand in front of the muzzle trying to
demonstrate the correct hold when the pistol went off. I heard a
muffled "phut" and the smell of "frying to-night" wafted across. Both
of them disappeared instantly off the range and I don't think that the
incident got reported. I met the instructor some months later and the
wound had healed without lasting damage.

I heard of another incident when someone fired over the butts with a
target rifle and the bullet hit a painter on top of a ladder some
distance away - probably a mile or two. It must have been an accidental
discharge to one side of the butts on Century, because a shot over the
butts would have landed in the danger area.
