target rifle and the bullet hit a painter on top of a ladder some
distance away - probably a mile or two.  It must have been an accidental
discharge to one side of the butts on Century, because a shot over the
butts would have landed in the danger area.

This is one that has been doing the rounds for a number of years but
has a number of variations.  Most of which involve a painter or
roofer some distance from the ranges 1-3 miles being the favourite,
though some go as far as five miles.  In most versions it was a near
miss not a hit or 'kill'.  I also heard that this incident was put
down to 7.62 being deflected in sand and/or  deflecting off debris 
n the butts, hence the extensive rebuilding of the butts on several
ranges some years ago.
