Ales said : I heard of another incident when someone fired over the butts with a
target rifle and the bullet hit a painter on top of a ladder some
distance away - probably a mile or two. It must have been an accidental
discharge to one side of the butts on Century, because a shot over the
butts would have landed in the danger area.
This is one that has been doing the rounds for a number of years but
has a number of variations. Most of which involve a painter or
roofer some distance from the ranges 1-3 miles being the favourite,
though some go as far as five miles. In most versions it was a near
miss not a hit or 'kill'. I also heard that this incident was put
down to 7.62 being deflected in sand and/or deflecting off debris
n the butts, hence the extensive rebuilding of the butts on several
ranges some years ago.
