You don't need to do anything.  you 'could' run a server, but don't bother.

ah memories...

irc clients generally have a logging option.  so if you are in a channel, you 
can log it.  but that assumes you are "in a channel" as in running an app on 
your main box.  What I do is run a 2nd client on a 'server' box that just sits 
and logs.  this is typically called a bot.
