Basically, you cannot take an app compiled under a linux distro like
Ubuntu and expect it to work under Windows with Cygwin.  You do need
to compile it from source.  But, Cygwin includes many Unix programs.
You have you basic ones like ls, ln, cd, rm, man, mkdir, touch, etc...
Then you have full blown compiled programs like apache, the gcc
compilers, svn, python, and more included.  In short, you can almost
bring linux functionality to Windows...

Other advantages are auto-path complete on tab, and history, unix path syntax.

Install it and you won't be disappointed.  Kicks the crap out of DOS.
