Thanks John. The re-install fixed everything. The original problematic version was 9.0.0.1, the version I just installed was 9.0.1.1. I did an install of the 64 bit version for Windows-7 (using Win7 Ultimate). Everything went smoothly using all the defaults. I ran through the Q&A with StackBuilder without a problem, though I didn't install anything. The problem command window was not present. I was able to backup a test database from the 32bit XP version and restore it to the Win7 64 bit version with no difficulty. All seems well and I do very much like the administrative tool pgAdmin-III.
