Umm...well, either it could select based on file type, or it could be
a project-wide setting, or both.  Theoretically, it could be an
option, but I think in general, you would choose a mode based on the
file contents.

No, I am not.  I am talking about adding a more granular method for
determining patches.

I'm not sure I quite follow you.  In fact, I am positive I don't have a
clue what you are talking about. If I use a darcs repository, I am
already locked into darcs?

Requiring collaborators to all use the same editor is a *much* more
draconian step, and I simply don't see any reasonable rationale for
doing so.
