Granted, you can manipulate them, but if you don't do that
deliberately -- most backup tools rely on them after all.  rsync
takes into account file length, too.

For what it's worth, I was surprised.  :o)  Normally, you'd consider
your files being self-contained (LibreOffice docs, GIMP XCFs, source
code files).
