I use Sony cameras, and I'd have to disagree. The noise behavior of both
my a550 and a57 is very "chunky", resulting in splotches of color,
making noise reduction extremely difficult.

For about ISO 800 and below, I just use profiled denoise in wavelet mode
with a low strength (around 35%) as a "good enough" filter. Some fine
grit remains but most of the detail is preserved. For higher ISO
settings, or when I have to boost the exposure a lot, my best solution
so far has been to enable:

1. hot pixels at quite aggressive settings (low threshold, high
strength, detect by 3 neighbors)

2. denoise (profiled) in wavelet mode, blend color, and strength quite
high (sometimes right up to 4) to smooth out the splotches

3. denoise (non-local means) luma at 100%, strength depending on how
noisy the shot is after exposure adjustments.

For whatever reason, I've found the non-local means denoise better than
profiled denose in non-local means mode, in part because I can tweak the
settings more.

FWIW I even went so far as to increase the hard-coded neighborhood size
in the source code. It helps a little, but comes at a huge performance
cost of course.
