I had a paper calibrated by ZEDOnet (Turboprint) and compared the output
to the paper manufacturer's icc ... the results from both appear very
very similar and gave a good representation of my screen when printed
through Turboprint/CUPS.
I cannot understand why the same icc displays differently on 2 different
printer drivers.

Definitely not me. You said that you have a calibrated paper, what ICC
profile are you using?
