Yep, I've been burned by both of them.  I used Nvidia exclusively for many 
years but then had a forced switch to AMD, then got burned by them recently and 
had to replace perfectly good card recently with the fglrx demise.  I wouldn't 
know which of the two sorry alternatives to recommend really, my strategy is to 
buy a reasonably cheap mid performance card that I can afford to replace every 
couple of years if need be rather than regarding as a long term investement.

But again this is not 100% correct as the AMD proprietary driver only support 
new hardwares. AMD has removed support for quite a few cards when they moved 
from fglrx to AMDGPU.

That why many people (including myself) strongly advise sticking to Nvidia 
which has been far more clean with the Open Source community.
