instead of all that, why don't you just utilize the script provided for
removing missing images from your db,
/usr/share/doc/packages/darktable/tools/purge_non_existing_images.sh
This script is not in .PPA for ubuntu and I understand is never going to
be as per https://redmine.darktable.org/issues/10343
Is it safe to just take it from here
https://github.com/darktable-org/darktable/tree/master/tools
and just run it?
How can we determine if we need to run it at all or not?
