For NVidia you need the binary drivers, the open source ones are
missing some OpenCL capabilities required by darktable. If you're
running some Ubuntu derivative they're pretty easy to install and
maintain.

To answer this you would need to tell us at least the typical use you
will give it (dozens of pictures per week, or 1000 per night?) and the
sensor size (20MP or 60MP?). Although there can be an appreciable
difference between a top-end card (2080) and a middle of the road one
(1660), it might not be worth the extra expense.

In general, any current decent card (= middle level and up) will be
almost lag-free on the darkroom. The main problem will be on export,
and even then it should take less than 10 seconds per picture. If you
export 10 or 20 pictures per session, I don't think that cutting the
export time by a couple of minutes is worth it. But if you
consistently export hundreds or thousands of pictures, then the time
reduction might be worth it (and you will probably also appreciate the
extra speed in the darkroom).

One point though: get at least 4GB of video memory, specially if you
have a high resolution camera.

Best regards,
Guillermo
