I disagree with this. In Ubuntu (and derivatives) NVidia binary drivers are installed and usually work out of the box (even on Optimus-based notebooks), and OpenCL support can be installed directly from the official Ubuntu repositories. I've been using darktable like this for years and never had any problem installing or upgrading the system.
