I disagree with this. In Ubuntu (and derivatives) NVidia binary
drivers are installed and usually work out of the box (even on
Optimus-based notebooks), and OpenCL support can be installed directly
from the official Ubuntu repositories. I've been using darktable like
this for years and never had any problem installing or upgrading the
system.
That's because Ubuntu maintainers got all the pain instead of you...
But that is about the situation in general, not just OpenCL. AMD has
recently reworked their OpenCL support and their work is not fully
finished yet, here Nvidia's OpenCL is much more mature and will cause
less troubles.
Also, Nvidia tries to promote their proprietary CUDA technology and
vendorlock software to use it. AMD has always supported OpenCL is
opposite to this, while Nvidia did not support newest OpenCL versions,
so, I hope, in a few years AMD will be much better than Nvidia for
OpenCL. They are working hard on ROCm...
