Patrick, In Darktable, «Import» means one of THREE things; ① to add a file which is located in DAS/NAS, to the DT database, ② to add a folder of files (and subfolders of files) which is located in DAS/NAS, to the DT database, and ③ to move files from a “camera”† to a preset DAS/NAS location, via a preset naming convention, then adding them to the DT database.
All three are considered «Import»ing, all three are available through the «Import» module,and all three ought to work. As others have said, most of us use some other application to move files from SD cards or our cameras to our DAS/NAS devices, then use one of the first two import methods. (Not that anyone asked, but I use Rapid Photo Downloader). That aside, the third import method is legitimately a Darktable import method, offered by DT. To say that that is not using DT, but gPhoto, is akin to saying that one does not use DT for raw processing, but Libraw, or does not use DT for lens correction, but Lensfun, et al. DT, like most F/LOSS titles, does not re-invent the wheel, but uses third-party wheels, just as Ford, Crystler, and GM do. † I have “camera” in quotes, because it can be any device recognised as a “camera device” including an SD Card.
