I have done that - in fact spent about 5 hours in total doing it. The conclusion is that I can determine no consistent pattern of behaviour - the auto apply conversion to monochrome is, for my environment and for knowledge/experience level, quite simply unpredictable and unknowable, but mostly non-functional, which tends to make one wary of using it.

I have had one instance where (all-1) raw images in a a newly imported folder have been automatically set to monochrome. I could find nothing in that one unconverted image which would have rendered it non-qualifying for conversion. I could not reproduce the behaviour - all subsequent attempts after a remove/re-import cycle failed to convert any images.

Aside from that one folder I have found no folders which get completely converted on import, even though the preset is enabled according to what I see in the presets tab of the settings panel. This is irrespective of the setting of "don't use embedded preview jpeg" in the lighttable section of the GUI Options tab in the settings panel.

I have had numerous instances where a folder in which I had to convert images manually and which folder I then subsequently removed and the re-imported, had some of those images, which i had converted manually prior to removal, automatically re-converted to monochrome on re-import, but most of the others not.

For reasons unknown to me the specific monochrome prest I have defined is sometimes highlighted in the list of monochrome presets, sometimes not; I can only view that preset's parameters when it is highlighted but doing so immediately turns on the monochrome module which defeats any test I might be trying to conclude.

The bottom line is that this 'auto apply' feature is utterly confusing to the 'non-IT-expert' user of Darktable. It is not explained in adequate detail in the documentation. I am incapable of understanding the explanations of or resolutions to my questions in this subscription list. So where else do I turn to get an adequate understanding of how to use DT in this specific activity (automatically convert to monochrome)?

Beg pardon - my request was poorly formulated.

DT: 3.0.2

O/S:Linux Mint 20 Cinnamon

Module: Using 'monochrome' module (just as a test for my learning of DT)

Settings: I tried configuring a test preset in monochrome by using  my mouse
to adjust the virtual color filter and then saving this as a preset with the
'auto apply this preset to matching images' option enabled.

I tried setting the individual selection parameters to match known images
('known' on the basis of data from the image information panel), but no
images, which I thought were 'matching', were converted to monochrome.

I tried setting the selection parameters to, effectively, 'select all', but
again no images were converted to monochrome when a folder is imported.
Conversion does take place when I open the darkroom on an individual image -
but only that image is converted. That is why I say  the 'auto apply' acts
more like 'manual apply' . I would have to go through the process of opening
each image in darkroom individually to convert the whole film-roll. And that
seems like defeating the purpose of 'auto apply'.

So where is my understanding inadequate?

One question which comes to mind: when is the 'auto apply' action designed
to take place - when a *new* image/folder is first imported, or when an
image in an *existing* film-roll is selected in light-table, or when an
*existing* image is opened in darkroom?

I have defined a preset and enabled the 'auto apply this preset to matching
images'. I find that the 'auto' part works only when I select the list of
presets for that module and click on the specific preset that I have
defined: i.e. I have to apply the 'auto' part manually. This applies no
matter how 'wide' I set the parameters for the preset. What am I failing to
understand ?
dt version
operating system
which module and what parameters

Why don't you make some test images and determine for yourself what
happens and when?
